- ABSTRACT
- Foundations for Native C++ Styles
-
- Stroustrup explores fundamental C++ concepts and facilities and
- presents distinctive C++ design and programming styles that have
- evolved to cope with the stringent demands of everyday systems
- building. First he explores C++'s support for concrete data
- types and containers and gives examples of how the C++ generic
- programming facilities, together with well-designed libraries,
- can yield flexibility and economy of expression. Next Stroustrup
- examines some uses of class hierarchies, touching on issues
- including encapsulation, interface design, efficiency, and
- maintainability. Finally, he reviews the background for
- C++'s success.
-
- *This presentation is suitable for all levels. Handouts of the
- paper, with coded examples throughout, will be available.

- BIOGRAPHY
-
- Bjarne Stroustrup is the designer and original implementor
- of C++ and the author of The C++ Programming Language (1st

- Evolution of C++, which won Dr. Dobbs Software
- Productivity Award in 1995.
- His research interests include distributed systems,
- operating systems, simulation, design and programming. He is
- the head of AT&T Bell Labs' Large-scale Programming Reserarch
- Department and an AT&T Bell Laboratories Fellow. He is actively
- involved in the ANSI/ISO standardization of C++. He is the
- recipient of the 1993 ACM Grace Murray Hopper award and an
- ACM Fellow. He received the Cand.Scient. degree from
- the University of Aarhus, Denmark, and the Ph.D. in
- computer science from Cambridge University.

- Location: Theater (north side of campus)
- Palo Alto H.S.
- 50 Embarcadero Road
- Palo Alto, CA
- Directions:
- Palo Alto H.S.
- From Hwy 101:
- Exit Hwy 101 at Embarcadero. Drive west (follow signs for
- Stanford University.) After about 1.5 miles or so, a
- tall cement center divide will appear. Go under the
- overpass, past a light, and shortly thereafter you will
- see a small left turn lane (no traffic light) which
- turns into the Palo Alto H.S. The theater is straight
- ahead.
-
- Alternate from 280:
- From Hwy 280, get off Page Mill/ Arastradero. Drive east
- on Page Mill, make a left at El Camino, go about a mile.
- The high school is on your right.
-
- Note there is a driveway on El Camino about 200 yards
- before the corner of El Camino and Embarcadero. If
- you are driving north on El Camino, you might want to
- start looking for a driveway just after you pass
- Churchhill Road and then some tennis courts on the
- right. If you miss that, go to Embarcadero,
- make a right, and another right into the first driveway
- about 100 yards after the corner turn.
